The Pomeranian's fluffy 'pom-pom' look comes from a thick double coat — a dense undercoat beneath a long, stand-off outer coat. The single most important grooming rule for this breed is never to shave it to the skin, as that can trigger coat funk (post-clipping alopecia) where the coat grows back patchy or not at all. Regular brushing and light tidying keep it healthy.

Coat type: Thick double coat with a soft dense undercoat and a long, stand-off guard coat.
A Pomeranian's coat is built to insulate, with the airy stand-off guard hairs supported by a soft undercoat. Brushing several times a week lifts and aerates both layers, removes loose undercoat and keeps the coat from packing down and matting at the base — common spots being behind the ears, the rear 'trousers' and around the collar.
The crucial warning for this breed is about shaving. Because the double coat doesn't reliably regrow after a close shave, Poms are prone to 'coat funk' or post-clipping alopecia, where the undercoat grows back but the guard coat doesn't, leaving a patchy, woolly or bald appearance that may be permanent. A reputable groomer will trim and tidy a Pom but will not shave it down to the skin, even in summer — the double coat actually helps regulate temperature.
Grooming a Pom is about tidying and de-shedding rather than clipping. The popular 'teddy bear' or 'lion' trims are achieved by careful scissoring to shape the coat while leaving plenty of length, never by clipping close. During seasonal coat blows the undercoat sheds heavily, so a de-shedding bath and blow-out helps clear it before it mats.
Teddy Bear trim
The coat scissored into a soft, rounded shape — fuller face and trimmed body — while keeping good length. Shaped, never shaved, to protect the double coat.
Lion trim
Body coat scissored shorter with a full mane left around the head, chest and shoulders for a little-lion look. Done with scissors, leaving length to avoid coat damage.
Tidy / Show-style trim
Minimal scissoring to neaten the outline, feet and rear while preserving the natural fluffy stand-off coat. The healthiest option for the coat.
Please don't. Shaving a double coat can trigger post-clipping alopecia (coat funk), where the fluffy guard coat doesn't grow back and you're left with a patchy, woolly dog. The double coat actually insulates against heat too — a good groomer will tidy and de-shed rather than shave, and shade plus water keep him cool.
Poms 'blow' their undercoat seasonally, releasing a lot of fluff at once. Increase brushing and book a de-shedding bath and blow-out to clear the loose undercoat before it mats. Year-round, a few brushes a week keeps shedding manageable.
Ask for a scissored teddy bear or lion trim that shapes the coat while leaving length — never a close clipper shave. That gives you a tidier, shorter look without risking the coat's ability to regrow properly.
