How to Choose a Responsible Dog Breeder in Queensland

Buying a puppy is a 10-to-15-year commitment, and where that puppy comes from shapes its health and temperament for life. A responsible breeder raises fewer litters, health-tests their breeding dogs, socialises puppies in the home, and stays in your life long after you take your puppy home. Taking the time to choose well is the single best way to avoid the heartache and vet bills that often follow an impulse purchase from a puppy farm or an online scam.

Use the checklist below whether you find a breeder here, through a registry, or by word of mouth.

What a Good Breeder Does

• Happily lets you visit and see the puppies with their mother in a clean home environment
• Health-tests the parents for conditions relevant to the breed and shows you the results
• Microchips, vaccinates, worms and vet-checks puppies before they go home (microchipping is required in Queensland)
• Asks you plenty of questions — a breeder who doesn't care where their puppies end up is a warning sign
• Provides a written contract, a health guarantee, and ongoing support and advice
• Is often a registered member of a recognised body such as Dogs Queensland (for purebred dogs)
• Never has a constant supply of multiple breeds “always available” — that points to a puppy farm

Red Flags to Avoid

• Refuses to let you visit, or wants to meet in a car park to hand over the puppy
• Won't let you see the mother, or the mum looks unwell or overbred
• Asks for full payment upfront via gift card, crypto or bank transfer before you've met the dog
• Has many breeds and litters available at once, with no waitlist
• Can't answer health-testing questions or provide vet records
• Pressures you to decide immediately or pay a deposit on the spot
