The Miniature Schnauzer's wiry double coat and signature beard, eyebrows and leg furnishings make it instantly recognisable. There's an important choice for this breed: hand-stripping, which preserves the harsh coat texture and rich colour, versus clipping, which is easier but softens the coat over time. Either way, the furnishings need regular care to stay clean and mat-free.

Coat type: Harsh, wiry double coat with a dense soft undercoat and the breed's characteristic furnishings.
Schnauzers have a genuine wiry terrier coat designed to be hand-stripped — the technique of pulling out the loose dead hairs by hand or with a stripping knife, which keeps the new coat harsh, weatherproof and richly coloured. Hand-stripping is labour-intensive and not every groomer offers it, but for show dogs and coat-texture purists it's the traditional method.
Most pet Schnauzers are clipped instead. Clipping is faster, more comfortable for the dog and perfectly fine for a companion, but owners should understand it cuts the coat rather than removing dead hair, so over time the harsh texture softens and the colour fades to a more silvery, woolly look. A clipped Schnauzer can also become more prone to matting in the furnishings.
The furnishings — the beard, eyebrows and skirt of longer hair on the legs and underbelly — are the high-maintenance part. They mat and collect debris, and the beard in particular traps food and water, so it needs regular combing and wiping. The classic clip leaves the body short with these furnishings shaped, the eyebrows arched and the beard squared off.
Traditional Schnauzer clip
Body and head clipped short, leg furnishings and skirt left longer, with arched eyebrows and a defined beard. The breed's signature look and the standard pet trim.
Hand-stripped show coat
Dead coat pulled by hand to maintain the harsh wiry texture and dark body colour, with the same furnishing pattern. Labour-intensive and offered by specialist groomers.
Short / Practical schnauzer trim
The classic outline but with the furnishings kept shorter for easier upkeep and a cooler dog in the SEQ heat.
Hand-stripping pulls out the dead wiry hairs so the new coat keeps its harsh texture and dark colour, while clipping cuts the coat, which is gentler and faster but gradually softens the texture and fades the colour. For a pet, clipping is perfectly fine — it's mainly show and texture-conscious owners who hand-strip.
Comb it regularly to prevent matting and wipe it after meals and drinks, since the beard traps food and water and can start to smell or stain. Some owners do a quick rinse and dry of the beard between full grooms.
Those are likely 'schnauzer bumps' (comedones) — essentially blackheads that the breed is prone to along the spine. Regular bathing helps; if they become red, sore or infected, a vet can recommend a medicated shampoo or treatment.
