Labradoodles and Groodles (Golden Retriever x Poodle) carry the Poodle's low-shedding fleece or wool coat on a larger frame, which means a lot of coat to maintain. These coats are notorious for matting, particularly as puppies transition into their adult coat. Consistent line-brushing and a clip-down every couple of months are essential.

Coat type: Fleece or wool textured low-shedding coat, ranging from soft loose fleece to dense tight wool.
Doodle coats come in two broad types: fleece, which is softer with a loose wave, and wool, which is denser and curlier like a Poodle's. Wool coats mat faster, but both need brushing right down to the skin — surface brushing leaves a layer of felt forming underneath that owners don't see until it's tight against the body.
The trickiest period is the 'coat change' between roughly 8 and 14 months, when the soft puppy coat is replaced by the adult coat. During this stage matting accelerates dramatically and many owners are caught out, ending up needing a full short clip-off. Daily brushing through this window saves a lot of grief.
Because these are bigger dogs with more coat, professional grooms take longer and cost more than a Toy breed. Keeping the coat in a shorter, practical clip and committing to genuine at-home line-brushing is the realistic path — expecting a long teddy bear coat to stay mat-free without daily work usually ends in a shave-down.
Teddy Bear clip
Even medium length over the body with a rounded, plush face — the classic Doodle look. Beautiful but requires committed daily brushing to maintain at length.
Short / Practical clip
A shorter all-over trim that's far easier to maintain between grooms and keeps a big coat comfortable in the SEQ heat. The sensible default for working families.
Kennel clip
Very short and uniform, often chosen after matting has set in or for low-fuss owners. Quick to maintain and keeps the dog cool.
That's the coat change — the puppy coat is shedding out and getting tangled in the incoming adult coat. It's the highest-risk matting period of a Doodle's life. Brush thoroughly every day through it, and accept that a shorter clip for a few months makes life much easier.
If the mats are tight against the skin, usually not — de-matting a heavily felted coat is painful and unsafe for the dog, so a short clip-off is the kind option. It grows back; the priority is your dog's comfort. Brushing afterwards prevents a repeat.
Every 6–8 weeks for most, paired with regular home brushing. Bigger coats and longer styles need the shorter end of that range. Stretching it much beyond eight weeks usually means arriving with mats.
