The Cavoodle is one of Australia's most popular family dogs, and its low-shedding coat is a big part of the appeal. Coat texture varies from soft waves to tight curls depending on the individual, but all of them mat if left unbrushed. Regular home brushing plus a groom every 5–6 weeks keeps the coat soft and comfortable.

Coat type: Soft wavy-to-curly low-shedding coat that varies between Cavalier-like waves and tighter Poodle curls.
Because Cavoodles are a cross, no two coats are identical — some take after the Cavalier with looser waves, others inherit a denser Poodle curl that mats more readily. The wavier coats can fool owners into thinking little brushing is needed, right up until a thick mat appears behind the ears. Treat every Cavoodle as a matting risk and brush accordingly.
The single most common problem area is behind and under the ears, where the long ear leather rubs against the cheek and neck. This friction felts the hair quickly, so part the ear up and comb that hidden hollow several times a week. The collar line, armpits and the backs of the legs are the other spots to check.
Many Cavoodle owners opt for a short, even teddy bear clip kept around the 1–2 cm mark, which dramatically reduces home maintenance and suits Queensland's warm climate. Even on a short clip, the face and ears still need regular combing because that's where tangles start.
Teddy Bear clip
The signature Cavoodle look — body trimmed to an even short length with a soft, full, rounded face and muzzle. Cute, practical and the most requested clip in SEQ salons.
Short / Summer clip
A closer all-over trim that keeps the dog cooler through the Queensland summer and stretches the time between mats. Face usually kept slightly fuller for expression.
Longer scruffy / natural trim
Coat left longer and lightly shaped for a fluffier look. Lovely but demands near-daily brushing to stay mat-free.
Yes. A softer wave can mat just as badly as a tight curl, it just hides it better. Brush four or five times a week and pay special attention behind the ears, where most Cavoodle mats start.
A short teddy bear clip around 1–2 cm is ideal for SEQ summers — cool, comfortable and low-maintenance, without going so short that the skin is exposed to sunburn. Your groomer can tailor the length to your dog's coat.
It's porphyrin in the tears reacting with the coat, often worse when eye hair is long or tear ducts are a bit blocked. Keeping the hair around the eyes trimmed, wiping the area daily and ensuring fresh water all help reduce it.
